War has existed in every culture throughout human history on both large and small scales. Many of the texts from antiquity in both Western and Eastern societies were written as guides to war, some tactical and some with ethical considerations. Peace can often be difficult to obtain and easy to loose when leaders and nations become entangled in competing interests. Is war an inevitable part of the human experience? How has war affected you personally? As a city built during a time of war, what shared values do we have concerning war and peace, if any? How can we find healthy ways to dialogue together about it?
This Sunday, February 16 at 6:00 PM, the community is invited to the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church for a People’s Supper event devoted to building community and sharing our thoughts with each other on this important topic. Conversation will take place over a meal and the topic will be introduced by two pastors (Jake Morrill, ORUUC and David Allred, High Places Community Church) whose relationship has led to some challenging and enriching conversations. We may not always end up on the same side of an issue, but through sustained dialogue and a commitment to build togetherness, we can find shared values beneath the “talking points.”
Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church is located at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike. We hope to see you there at 6:00 PM this Sunday!
